Basic Dog Training
My dog is really crazy and hyper, I gave it basic training but that doesnt seem to help. What do i do?
Its a boy golden retriever and he is 8 months old. He jumps on people and tries to mouth them. He is not neutered because we might mate him. We already thought about a trainer but is too expensive. Please help. Thank you.
Exercise, exercise, exercise. A tired dog is a good dog. Basic training will do nothing (although if he’s still mouthing and jumping, you really haven’t done any basic training because those are the first two things you learn in basic training). You have an extremely high energy dog that will become very destructive if he gets bored. He needs A LOT of exercise everyday. My brother runs with his goldens five to six miles a day and they still have energy to burn in the evenings so they get walked by my sister in law in the evenings a few extra miles. Training isn’t expensive. I’m sure that you paid more for him than the training will cost you. It runs around $120 in my area for six weeks of training. You need to do it now because he’s just going to get LARGER and even harder to control. The training is more for you than him. It teaches YOU how to communicate effectively with him.
Why are you thinking of mating him? It’s very expensive to mate. He needs genetic testing to make sure that his genes are worthy of passing along. Also, he needs to be titled. It will be at least another year and a half before you can even consider mating him. Have you studied under a breeding mentor? They are absolutely necessary if you are even thinking of breeding. Otherwise, you end up being just another backyard breeder who is putting substandard puppies out there. We’re seeing a lot more lawsuits in our area because people aren’t doing their research, are buying from someone who hasn’t done everything above (backyard breeder) and are ending up with a dog that isn’t up to standard so they sue.
